Last weeks performance was going to be hard to live up to. Although the scoreline suggests otherwise, this was at times a sluggish performance. But the boys dug deep and worked hard as a team.
Our chairman conducted the early pleasantries welcoming Mortimer Stingers to the Lane. What an ould charmer he can be sometimes.
Early doors the boys made some good moves and forced the game, but little by little they allowed Mortimer to come at them. Liam starting on the right (not his favoured position) found some good space and finished clinically, 1-0 Rangers.
But once again Mortimer were coming more and more into the game. Heather, our secretarial fortune teller, whispered to me “we need another goal before half”, Lo and behold Will, the boy with Dead Shot Keans old boots, must have been listening. Up he pops with the cleverest of lobs over the keeper, 2-0.
The boys knew at half time, it wasn’t really clicking for them, and promised to work hard, which they did, but still it was a bit too loose.
Mortimer were really pushing now, but mid way through a superb ball through the centre from Joe, found Luke who despite not being favourite for the ball, showed great strength to get on the end of it and dispatched a right footed shot to give us a bit of daylight.
Liam added a fourth, and it was really game over from then on. Rangers are showing a superb attitude and a real joy in playing at the moment, long may it continue.
Mortimer Stingers also deserve great praise for both the players and coaches who played and conducted themselves in the right spirit. In all honesty it was probably a closer game than the scoreline suggests.
