The result is what catches the eye and, to be fair, paints an accurate picture. This game was lost in the first half even though it ended at nil all after 40 mins. We lacked the passion and fight to get the ball, and passing and moving was non-existent. RS, however, had more grit and determination which was mirrored in the free-kick count. From the sidelines, we only saw one real glimpse of play towards the end of the first half that showed promise. We hoped that a dressing down at half time might wake the boys out of their slumber.

After 4 mins into the second half and the deadlock was broken. A simple ball from an RS corner kick found an attacker. With our players static, RS simply knocked it into the goal: 0-1. Another goal arrived after 51 mins when an RS attacker shot a low ball towards JackA which bounced awkwardly in front of him and into the net: 0-2. RS were elated, as thus far this season they’d only racked up one point and now found themselves 2 up against the table toppers. As they grew in confidence we fell into a funk. The boys were out-muscled and looked too frightened to challenge for the 2nd ball. Further goals at 58 and 74 mins didn’t come as a surprise as the boys couldn’t raise their game. I heard someone remark ‘bad day at the office’ but it was more about complacency and lack of steel.

The game ended 0-4. Credit to RS who played well and showed what a little passion and determination can achieve.

Special call out to Ajay who demonstrated some good defending and composure throughout the game.
